20 Questions to Ask a Croatian Employer Before Accepting a Job

By April 29, 2026 Work in Croatia

Last reviewed: June 2026. This JobCro guide is written for foreign workers who have received, or expect to receive, a Croatian job offer. It gives concrete questions to ask before accepting work, paying fees, resigning from another job or travelling.

Good employers can answer practical questions clearly. Asking detailed questions is not rude. It protects both the worker and the employer from misunderstanding salary, accommodation, documents, start dates and legal work permission. If an employer becomes angry because you ask normal questions, treat that as useful information.

Quick take: ask questions in writing, compare the answers with the contract and do not accept verbal promises as final terms. The most important topics are employer identity, job duties, salary, accommodation, working hours, permit route, health insurance and what happens if approval is delayed.

Before you ask: prepare your message

Send one polite message with grouped questions. Do not send twenty separate messages. Explain that you want to understand the offer correctly before making travel and document decisions.

Example opening:

Thank you for the offer. Before I confirm my decision, I would like to check the practical details in writing so I can prepare documents correctly and avoid misunderstandings about the contract, accommodation and work permit process.

Employer identity

  1. What is the full legal name of the employer?
Ask for the legal company name, not only the hotel, restaurant, project or recruiter brand.
  2. What is the employer OIB or registration information?
This helps you verify the company through public sources where possible.
  3. Can I speak directly with HR or a company representative?
A recruiter can help, but the employer should not be completely hidden.

Job and workplace

  1. What is my exact job title and daily duty list?
The job title should match the actual work and the future permit route.
  2. Where exactly will I work?
Ask for city, address, branch, hotel, site or client location.
  3. Is the contract seasonal, fixed-term or indefinite?
This affects income stability, housing and family plans.
  4. What is the expected start date, and what happens if documents are delayed?
A serious employer understands that permit timing can change.

Salary and deductions

  1. What is the gross monthly salary?
Croatian salary discussions should start with gross salary.
  2. What net salary should I realistically expect?
Ask whether the estimate includes tax, contributions and personal circumstances.
  3. When is salary paid each month?
Workers need to plan food, transport and family support until the first salary.
  4. Which costs are deducted from salary?
Ask about accommodation, meals, transport, uniforms, medical checks and documents.

Working hours and rest

  1. How many hours per week are included?
Do not accept only “full time” if the job has seasonal peaks.
  2. How is overtime approved, recorded and paid?
Invest Croatia summarises that overtime has limits and workers are entitled to increased salary for performed overtime.
  3. Are Sunday, holiday and night hours paid extra?
This matters in tourism, hospitality, logistics and production.
  4. How many rest days can I expect in normal and peak periods?
Ask especially for seasonal coastal jobs and split shifts.

Accommodation and daily life

  1. Is accommodation provided?
If yes, ask whether it is free or deducted.
  2. How many people share the room, bathroom and kitchen?
For seasonal work, MUP publishes standards for appropriate accommodation.
  3. How do I travel from accommodation to work?
Transport is critical for islands, construction sites, factories and night shifts.

Permit, health insurance and safety

  1. Who handles the stay and work permit, HZZ step or work registration?
Ask which route applies and which documents you must prepare.
  2. When do health insurance, safety training and protective equipment start?
Do not begin risky work without legal and safety basics in place.

Extra questions for family plans

If your family may join later, ask these before accepting:

  • Is this job seasonal or stable enough for family planning?
  • Can the salary support family housing, food, school and documents?
  • Does employer accommodation allow family members?
  • Can the employer provide documents needed for family-reunification checks?

How to interpret the answers

Good answers are specific, written and consistent with the contract. Risky answers are vague, emotional or constantly changing. If the recruiter gives one salary, the employer gives another and the contract says a third, do not travel until the difference is explained.

Warning signs

  • The employer refuses written answers.
  • The recruiter says the contract will be shown only after arrival.
  • Salary is discussed only as “around” a net amount.
  • Accommodation has no address or conditions.
  • You are told to work before approval.
  • The employer name, job title or location changes during the process.
